Driving licence renewal in India: process, documents and the dates that matter
A driving licence in India is easy to forget because it lasts so long: issued for twenty years or until you turn fifty, whichever comes first, and after that renewed for shorter terms. Two decades is more than enough time for the date to disappear from memory.
This guide explains how the renewal works through the official Parivahan Sarathi portal, which documents you need, and — most importantly — the window around the expiry date that decides whether the renewal is routine or turns into a fresh test.
1. When your licence expires, and the window around it
A private (non-transport) licence is typically valid for twenty years from the date of issue or until the holder turns fifty, whichever comes earlier. Later renewals run for shorter periods, and transport licences are renewed far more often.
The important part is the window. You can apply for renewal in advance of the expiry date, and a short grace period after it still counts as a normal renewal. Beyond that, late fees apply for every year of delay, and if the licence has been expired for a long stretch the authority can require a fresh driving test.
- apply before the expiry date whenever possible
- a short grace window after expiry is still treated as an ordinary renewal
- beyond it, late fees are charged for each year the licence stays expired
- after a long lapse, a new driving test may be required
- driving on an expired licence is an offence, even by a single day
2. Documents and forms you need
The renewal is handled by your RTO through the Parivahan Sarathi portal, and the document list is short. A medical certificate is the item most people are unaware of.
- the existing driving licence
- Form 2 — the application for renewal
- Form 1A — medical certificate, required for applicants above 40 and for transport licences
- proof of address and proof of age
- passport-size photographs
- the applicable fee, paid online during the application
3. How to renew online, step by step
The whole application starts on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, the official Ministry of Road Transport and Highways service. Everything up to the final verification is done from the phone or a computer.
- open the Sarathi portal and select your state
- choose the driving licence services, then the renewal option
- enter the licence number and date of birth to load your details
- fill Form 2, upload the documents and Form 1A where required
- pay the fee online and save the acknowledgement
- attend the RTO appointment if biometric or document verification is requested
- track the application status, then collect or receive the renewed licence
4. What tends to go wrong
Most rejected renewals are not complicated cases — they are small mismatches that are easy to prevent.
- a Form 1A medical certificate missing for an applicant over 40
- the address on the licence no longer matching the proof of address
- an expired licence left unrenewed long enough to trigger a re-test
- applying in the wrong state's portal after moving city
- letting the acknowledgement go untracked and missing the RTO appointment
5. The one thing that prevents all of it
Every problem above starts from the same place: nobody is told when the date is near. There is no letter, no message and no alert — the expiry lives only on the card in your wallet.
Take the expiry date off the licence once and set an alert two months before. Two months is the right notice here, because the medical certificate, the documents and a possible RTO visit all take time.
Do the same for the vehicle's documents while the card is in your hand: insurance renewal, PUC certificate and registration all expire on their own schedules, and all of them are checked at the roadside.
How MiRicordi handles it
MiRicordi is a free reminder app for Android. You enter the licence expiry date once, choose the notice period, and the alert arrives on time — even when the app is closed.
Photographs of the licence, the insurance policy and the PUC certificate can be attached to the same reminders, so the documents and their dates stay in one place. Renewals can be set to repeat, so the next cycle is already scheduled.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a driving licence valid in India?
A private licence is generally valid for twenty years from issue or until the holder turns fifty, whichever comes first. After that it is renewed for shorter terms, and transport licences are renewed considerably more often.
Can I renew my driving licence online?
Yes. The application is made through the official Parivahan Sarathi portal: you select your state, load your licence details, complete Form 2, upload the documents and pay the fee online. An RTO visit may still be required for verification.
Do I need a medical certificate to renew my licence?
Form 1A, the medical certificate, is required for applicants above the age of 40 and for transport licences. It is the single most common reason a renewal application is held up.
What happens if my driving licence has expired?
A short grace period after expiry is still treated as a normal renewal. After that, a late fee applies for each year of delay, and if the licence has been expired for a long period the authority can require a fresh driving test. Driving on an expired licence is an offence.
How can I get a reminder before my licence expires?
Record the expiry date from the card in a reminder app and set the alert about two months ahead, which is enough time for the medical certificate and any RTO visit. MiRicordi is free on Google Play and can hold the licence photo alongside the date.
