LTO car registration renewal: when yours is due and how to renew it

Vehicle registration in the Philippines is unusual in one respect: your deadline is not the same as everybody else's, and it is not written anywhere obvious. It is decided by your plate number.

That is exactly why it gets missed. This guide explains how to work out when your registration is due, what you need to renew it, and what a late renewal costs.

1. Your plate number sets your deadline

Registration renewal follows a staggered schedule. The last digit of the plate number determines the month, and the second-to-last digit determines the week within that month.

So a car whose plate ends in 3 renews in March, and the specific week depends on the digit before it. Once you know your month and week, the date is the same every year — which makes it perfect for a repeating reminder.

  • last digit of the plate → the month of renewal
  • second-to-last digit → the week within that month
  • the schedule repeats every year, on the same pattern
  • newly registered vehicles follow their initial registration date first

2. What you need to renew

The two items that hold people up are the compulsory third-party liability insurance and the emission test, because both must be valid at the moment of renewal — not arranged afterwards.

  • the Certificate of Registration (CR) and latest Official Receipt (OR)
  • valid CTPL (compulsory third-party liability) insurance
  • a passed emission test from an accredited testing centre
  • the motor vehicle inspection where required for your vehicle
  • a valid ID of the registered owner, or an authorisation letter if someone else goes
  • the renewal fees, plus penalties if you are past your week

3. How the renewal goes

Most of the day is spent on the two checks rather than at the LTO counter itself. Doing them in the right order, a week or two before your scheduled week, is what turns this into a short errand.

  • renew or buy the CTPL insurance first
  • take the vehicle for the emission test and keep the result
  • complete the inspection if your vehicle requires it
  • bring CR, OR, insurance and test results to the LTO office or an authorised centre
  • pay the fees and keep the new Official Receipt in the vehicle

4. Renewing late

Late renewal is charged as a penalty on top of the ordinary fees, and it grows the longer the registration stays lapsed. Driving an unregistered vehicle is a separate offence, and the vehicle can be flagged at checkpoints.

Leaving it for years is worse than expensive: a long-delinquent registration becomes a bureaucratic problem in its own right when you later want to sell or transfer the vehicle.

5. Why people miss it, and the thirty-second fix

Nobody sends a renewal notice. The deadline is derived from a plate number, sits in a different month for every driver, and is remembered only by people who happen to think of it.

Since the month and week repeat every year, set one repeating alert — a month before your scheduled week — and the problem is solved permanently. A month is the right notice: it leaves room for the insurance, the emission test and a second attempt if anything fails.

How MiRicordi handles it

MiRicordi is a free reminder app for Android. Set the registration renewal once as a yearly repeating reminder, choose the notice period, and the alert arrives on time even when the app is closed.

Photos of the CR, the OR and the insurance certificate can be attached to the same reminder, so the paperwork and the date live together instead of in the glovebox.

Frequently asked questions

When is my LTO car registration renewal due?

The last digit of your plate number sets the month and the second-to-last digit sets the week within that month. The pattern repeats every year, so once you know your month and week the date is predictable.

What do I need to renew my car registration?

The Certificate of Registration and latest Official Receipt, valid CTPL insurance, a passed emission test, the inspection where required, a valid ID of the registered owner, and the fees.

What happens if I renew my registration late?

A penalty is added on top of the normal fees and increases the longer the registration stays lapsed. Driving an unregistered vehicle is a separate offence and can be flagged at checkpoints.

Can I renew my car registration online?

Parts of the process are handled through LTO online services, but the emission test and, where applicable, the vehicle inspection are physical checks. Confirm what is available for your vehicle on the LTO's own channels before travelling.

How do I remember my registration renewal every year?

Set a yearly repeating reminder one month before your scheduled week, so there is time for the insurance and the emission test. MiRicordi is free on Google Play and can hold photos of the CR and OR with the date.
