Licence disc renewal in South Africa: cost, documents and how to never miss the date

1. When the renewal is due

The disc expires on the last day of the month shown on it. The renewal notice (form MVL2) is usually posted to the address held on the eNaTIS record roughly two months before expiry — which only works if that address is current.

You can renew in advance: most authorities accept renewal from around three months before the expiry date. Renewing early is the simplest way to avoid queues at month end.

2. What you need to bring

The paperwork is short, but arriving without one item means a second trip. Take the renewal notice if you have it; if it never arrived, ask for the ALV/VL1 form at the counter instead.

• your identity document, plus a copy
• proof of residential address, usually not older than three months
• the payment — card or cash depending on where you renew
• if you are renewing for someone else: their ID copy and a signed letter of authority

3. Where you can renew it

Renewal is no longer a traffic-department-only errand. Several channels handle it, and the quietest one is rarely the licensing office.

• the motor vehicle registering authority or municipal licensing office
• the Post Office
• selected banks, which renew on your behalf and deliver the disc
• some retail chains that have added the service in store
• online services offered by certain provinces and municipalities

4. What it costs, and what being late costs

The licence fee itself depends on the vehicle's tare weight and on the province, so two identical cars registered in different provinces can pay different amounts. The figure on your renewal notice is the one that applies to you.

Late renewal is where it becomes expensive. A grace period of around 21 days after expiry is generally allowed for renewing without penalty; after that, a penalty accrues for each month the disc stays unrenewed, and it keeps growing until you pay.

Driving with an expired disc can also earn a fine at a roadblock, and an expired disc is frequently the first thing an officer checks.

5. Why the reminder matters more than the notice

Almost every late renewal starts the same way: the notice did not arrive, or it arrived and was put on a pile. The date does not care either way.

The fix is to stop relying on the post. Take the expiry month off the disc once, set an alert three to four weeks earlier, and set it to repeat every year. From then on the reminder arrives whether or not the notice does.

A photo of the disc and of your ID kept with the reminder means that when the alert arrives, the details you need are already in your hand.
