When is my NCT due? Irish test intervals explained simply
The NCT is one of those dates that feels far away until it is not. Test centres can be booked out for weeks, and the reminder arrives by post — which only works if the address on the record is current.
This guide sets out when the test falls due, what happens if it lapses, and how to stop it sneaking up.
When a car first needs an NCT
The due date follows the vehicle's first registration, not the calendar year, which is why no two cars in the same household tend to fall due together.
- A new car is first tested when it is four years old.
- From then until the car is ten years old, the test is every two years.
- Once the car is ten years old or more, it becomes annual.
The reminder letter is not a safety net
The National Car Testing Service normally issues a reminder ahead of the due date, but it is posted to the address held on the vehicle record. After a move or a change of ownership it can easily go astray, and the legal responsibility stays with the owner either way.
Booking early matters too: in busy periods the first available appointment can be weeks after the date you wanted.
What happens if the NCT lapses
Driving without a valid NCT certificate where one is required is an offence, and can bring a fine and penalty points. It can also complicate an insurance claim, since a valid test is part of keeping the car roadworthy.
If the disc has already expired, the practical step is to book the test immediately rather than wait for a convenient slot.
The three Irish car dates worth keeping together
They rarely fall in the same month, which is why keeping them in one list beats trying to remember three separate anniversaries.
- NCT: every two years, then annually once the car is ten.
- Motor tax: three, six or twelve months, renewed from the expiry of the current period.
- Insurance: annually.
- Service and tyre checks, by time or mileage.
Setting it once
Four to six weeks of notice is realistic for the NCT: enough time to get an appointment and to fix anything minor before the test rather than after a fail.
